Use of a Switching Hub

Connecting to a LAN or LC/GC ChemStation

Use a switching hub to connect the Agilent ICP-MS and PC to the LAN.

When using a switching hub, be sure to assign fixed (static) IP addresses, that share the same subnet mask, to the Agilent ICP-MS and the PC.

Function of the Switching Hub

When packets are transferred for the first time, they are sent to the server. Then, the server determines the destination of the packets, and the packets are sent to the switching hub. The switching hub then sends the packets to the specified destination. In this operation, the switching hub stores in internal memory the location data of the packet sending device and the destination device. If both the packet sending device and the destination device are connected to the same switching hub, the switching hub can transfer packets based on the stored location data. Therefore, for the second and subsequent packet transfers, the switching hub can distribute packets without referring to the server.

This function reduces the amount of traffic on the LAN.

Packets are sent to the server only when the communication is initiated for the first time after the instrument, PC, and/or switching hub is restarted after they have been shut down.

The Agilent ICP-MS cannot operate if it is installed with multiple LAN cards.
